Hold your cell phone up to the cash register, release the payment and the money will be deducted immediately without any detours via America: With the European Payments Initiative (EPI) and the European Central Bank's digital euro, a private sector and a public sector actor want to create new electronic and mobile payment systems for Europe create.
However, their similar usage scenarios could also create unnecessary competition and jeopardize the common goal of becoming less dependent on large US corporations such as Visa, Mastercard and PayPal.
We present both projects and spoke about their positions in a double interview with Joachim Schmalzl from the Sparkasse Association and Dirk Schrade from the Bundesbank.
