The mayor of Puigverd (Lleida), Josep Solsona Batlle, has been arrested by the Mossos for a crime of sexist violence in the family, as sources from the Catalan police have confirmed to EFE. Solsona (Junts), according to the same sources, was arrested at noon on Friday, 8M, and, after sleeping in the police station, he is scheduled to appear in court this Saturday.
The mayor, according to what the newspaper published this Saturday secret from Lleida, is accused of sexist violence in a case in which, at the moment, further circumstances are unknown, which the Mossos are now investigating. Junts has released a statement showing its “dismay” at the reported events and giving its support to the affected people. The party has suspended Solsona from militancy until the facts are clarified and has also asked the accused to leave the mayor's office of the municipality where 1,400 people live.
Solsona assumed the mayorship of Puigverd in August 2022 after a motion of censure promoted by his party and the PSC against the Republican mayor Sandra Barberà was successful, a position in which he remains after the last municipal elections. Last January, the mayor caused controversy for some statements in which he maintained that “a women's association is sexist”, made during a training event at the Government delegation on equal treatment and non-discrimination. “In an egalitarian society there should be no female or male associations,” said the mayor.
