Arón Canet already has his first victory in the Moto2 category. There have been many years of waiting, many frustrating races, many second places, but the wait is now over. The one from Corbera has finally achieved the long-awaited victory in the intermediate category after five years of trying. The Fantic driver took advantage of Alonso López's mistake, who crashed when he was first. As soon as he took the lead, the Spaniard did not waste the opportunity and crossed the finish line of the Portuguese MotoGP GP in first position.
We must also highlight the great comeback of Fermín Aldeguer what He had to do a double long lap after getting ahead of himself at the start. That failure condemned him for the entire race, leading him to be more than four seconds behind the leader and outside the top ten. But the man who will be a Ducati rider in MotoGP next year pulled out all the stops and made a spectacular comeback to finish fourth and fight for the podium on the last lap. In the end that position went to Manu González.
The Valencian driver did not make a good start, he lost several positions and He fell to sixth place in the first laps. Little by little he moved up positions on the grid until he was placed third, behind the Boscoscuro of Alonso López and Fermín Aldeguer who had one point more than the rest. But the Murcian had to complete a double long lap and as soon as he did the first, Canet was placed second. However, Alonso seemed unreachable.
The winner of the Qatar race remained very firm in that position and the distance to the Fantic driver was just over a second. But eleven laps from the end, with Arón only half a second away, the Madrid driver crashed at turn 13 and said goodbye to all his chances of victory. Canet took the lead of the race at that moment and did not let go. The Valencian had practiced race pace throughout the weekend and went from less to more until he achieved glory.
Canet is the new leader of the World Cup
He has been second up to 15 times he 44 in the last four seasons in Moto2. In fact, Canet had not won a race in the World Championship since Aragón 2019 in Moto3. He had just finished tenth in the Qatar race, but Arón had something more here in Portimao and took advantage of that mistake by Alonso López to get his first victory in the category with a scare included. In the last corner, the man from Corbera raised his left foot to save the fall, freezing the hearts of his entire team and his followers.
But then he raised his finger in celebration before seeing the checkered flag and earning his first victory. A victory that places the Spaniard as the new leader of the championship with 31 points, two more than Joe Roberts, second, and four more than the third, Manu González. For his part, Aldeguer is eleventh with 13 points. The Murcian made a great comeback but in the end the tires fell and he couldn't fight for the podium as he would have liked and he had to settle for a great fourth position, even though he started second.
