A man is being investigated as the alleged murderer of his 25-year-old partner on Tuesday afternoon in Palmeira, in the A Coruña municipality of Ribeira. According to the first investigations, the man called a family member to confess to the crime and advance his intention to commit suicide, sources in the case have informed EFE. Although he tried to take his own life, he did not succeed and is now in critical condition in the hospital.
It was this person, whom the alleged murderer called, who notified the emergency services, although the neighbors also raised the alarm when they heard a loud argument at the home.
The woman's body was found on the floor of the kitchen on the ground floor of the property that, apparently, they both shared. As confirmed by the mayor of Ribeira, Luís Pérez, who went to the scene, the couple has a two-year-old son in common, who “fortunately” was not in the house.
The councilor has not given more information and has asked for respect because the crime committed around 5:30 p.m. is still being investigated, so “we have to wait to clarify anything more,” he said. The Ribeira City Council has called an urgent plenary session for tomorrow, Wednesday, and a minute of silence in rejection of the crime.
“We shudder every time we receive news like this. A new sexist murder leaves Galician society and the town of Ribeira speechless,” wrote Alfonso Rueda, acting president of Galicia, on his account on the social network X this afternoon. He has also sent his “support and love to Andrea's family and loved ones. #NinUnhaMenos”, concludes the message.
On the same social network, the Ministry of Equality has written: “We are collecting data on the alleged murder by #GenderViolence of a 25-year-old woman in the province of A Coruña.”
If this case is confirmed as a sexist murder, it would be the first woman killed by gender violence in Galicia so far this year and the seventh in Spain. Since official statistics began in 2003, there have been 1,246 women.
