The new Zündapp is not made in Germany. The German – or more precisely: Bavarian – motorcycle manufacturer closed its factory gates back in 1984. Even then, the trademark rights and machinery went to China. Since 2017, new motorcycles have been offered again under the name Zündapp, also and especially in Germany. The headquarters of the Zündapp Vertriebsgesellschaft is, as last, in Munich. The product range also includes bicycles and pedelecs, and the Karcher company from Birkenfeld is involved in selling the motorcycles.
Design and color inspired by Ducati
Now people are venturing beyond scooters and motorbikes with 50 or 125 cc: the new ZXA Adventure 500 was surprisingly presented at Intermot 2022. At first glance it looks like a Ducati Multistrada – and that’s probably intentional. Like the other current Zundapp models, the new 500 series enduro is also produced in China. It is not known which Chinese manufacturer this is. The additional “530 TT” lettering on the exhibit was a bit irritating.
In-line two-cylinder with 48 hp
The key data are promising: A modern in-line two-cylinder with 476 cc, water cooling, petrol injection, double overhead camshafts, four valves per cylinder and six-speed gearbox is used as the drive. 35 kW (47.6 hp) is mentioned as the top performance, which fits in perfectly with the European graduated driver’s license regulations. It goes without saying that it conforms to Euro 5 with the corresponding exhaust gas cleaning. Fuel consumption: allegedly 4 liters per 100 kilometers.
Under 200 kilos with 18 liter tank and ABS
The new Zundapp is also aimed at Europe with the ABS for the three disc brakes. At 800 millimeters, the seat height is moderate, especially for enduro conditions. According to the manufacturer, the ZXA 500 Adventure weighs less than 200 kilograms with 18 liters of petrol in the tank. More precisely: 196 kilograms. The permissible total weight is specified as 396 kilograms, which means: exactly 200 kilograms of additional load.
17 inch tubeless wheels
Aluminum panniers and protectors were even mounted on the Intermot exhibition vehicle, and these are probably original accessories. Further key data on the ZXA 500 Adventure are not yet available, but these details can already be seen: adjustable upside-down telescopic forks with radially mounted brake callipers, central spring strut at the rear and wire spoke wheels laced for tubeless operation. Tires with an enduro profile are fitted, but in street format 17 inches – front and rear.
Neat, modern facilities
Headlights and all other lights are on the current LED standard, the cockpit looks digital, but like LCD. There are also two sockets, 12 volt and USB, and a small storage compartment. The high windshield is adjustable, even by hand. The price tag for the Zundapp ZXA Adventure 500 will be EUR 7,499.90.
Yes, the manufacturers from China have a lot of tailwind and money is not an issue.
Never, passion, history and quality, China doesn’t learn overnight.
One of the few Intermot surprises of 2022: the new Zundapp ZXA Adventure 500. It looks like a Ducati Multistrada from afar, and that is quite intentional. With two in-line cylinders, 48 hp and decent equipment for 7,499 euros, it fits very well into the A2 enduro class. The Benelli TRK 502, which is currently priced a little cheaper at 7,149 euros, dominates here, but it comes with a weight of 235 kilos and without tubeless spoked wheels.
