Microsoft confirms some problems with the update to Windows 11 22H2, also known as the “2022 Update”, which was released just this week. In addition, the regular Windows updates for the original Windows 11 21H2, for example, can cause despair for some users due to malfunctions.
Just a few days after Microsoft released the update to the 2022 update, the company confirmed three problems with it under the Windows Release Health list. File copies using Group Policy settings may fail or produce empty shortcuts or zero-byte files. Known affected GPOs are related to files and shortcuts under User Configuration/Settings/Windows Settings in the Group Policy Editor, Microsoft explains.
To circumvent the problem, the company proposes some measures. Unchecking the “Run in logged-on user’s security context (user policy option)” option should help, as long as there is no wildcard
is used. It can also help to select the “Update” option instead of “Replace”. If a wildcard
must be used, removing the closing backslash (\) may result in the copying process succeeding.
Older problems also on new Windows
The installation of the security update for the Secure Boot DBX with the knowledge base entry KB5012170 can fail with the message 0x800f0922. Microsoft is still investigating the problem, but in some cases it can be avoided by installing an up-to-date system BIOS. The problem already appeared in various Windows versions in August, but is now also present in the new Windows 11 version.
Also an old issue that has existed since November 2021 affects certain versions of Intel Smart Sound Drivers. In combination with certain eleventh generation Intel processors, they lead to blue screens, which is why Microsoft blocks the update if the driver versions are found. This can be remedied by installing updated drivers from the manufacturer.
Bugs in older versions of Windows
The updates for older Windows versions from last week also have some undesirable side effects. In addition to the three errors mentioned above, which also affect the older Windows versions, Microsoft lists other problems with the September updates.
These may include issues with Chilean Daylight Saving Time, which the local government has decided to change for 2022. XPS Viewer may not be able to open documents containing non-English languages such as Chinese or Japanese. In addition, opening the voice recording or dictation function with the key combination Windows key and “h” could fail with an error message. However, Microsoft has already fixed some of the errors, for example through server-side changes or new updates.
