The Government will meet this Friday with the platform of the truckers before the threat of a new strike in the month of July. A meeting in which the sector hopes that the Ministry of Transport, portfolio of Rachel Sanchez, in response to the petitions that were registered with the end of the March strike and the development of the “promised” Law. In addition, carriers will denounce the behavior of some shippers in terms of prices, retaliation, and coercion towards drivers.
This has been confirmed by the president of the truckers’ association in defense of the transport sector, Manuel Hernandezin conversations with this newspaper that has warned that “once the meeting with the Ministry of Transport is over, the result will be transferred, but if the promises that were put on the table in March to end the strike of the activity -which had a significant impact on the economy- are not fulfilled before June 30, we will take the necessary measures”.
Specifically, the Ministry of Transport has convened the truckers’ platform to hold a meeting with the General Director of Transport, Jaime Moreno Garcia-Canonext Friday, June 10 at 12:00 in the morning at the Ministry’s headquarters.
Thus, the platform of the truckers forces the Government to sit down before the threat of a new strike in the month of July if the law that prevents truck drivers from working below their costs is not published before June 30, the date set by the Ministry itself and for which there are three weeks left. If the date is not met, the carriers will stop their trucks.
“You made a commitment that on June 30, 2022, the Law Prohibiting Contracting at a Loss in the Road Freight Transport Sector would be prepared and that it is the number one need for us. The Minister told us Rachel Sanchez that we would be informed about its progress and drafting, and we were strongly urged to trust their word, “they claimed in a statement from the platform.
The president of the truckers’ platform criticized that “costs mainly, fuel, have risen 10% from the strike to the present, the operating costs of our trucks are close to 1,50 euros and the average price we receive is between 0.85 and 0.95 euros, the transport operators have raised the prices for the factories taking advantage of the situation, between 40 and 60% for transport services and they are not transferring it to the carriers, and all the precariousness and abuses that we denounced continue to occur without the Transport Inspectorate avoiding or intervening in anything ».
In addition, the employers denounce abuses by shippers: “We want to account, before the Ministry of Transport, for the development of the demands and warnings that are being made to different shippers and large companies in the sector.” “Several legal actions are already prepared that will be presented shortly to different chargers for throwing carriers out on the street who exercised their right to strike, ”they conclude.
