The Spanish women’s team is experiencing a very turbulent moment after 15 players lined up to remove coach Jorge Vilda from office. The coach is ratified by the Federation until the 2023 World Cup and from the federative body they do not plan to relegate him from his position. The players, through a letter, They gave their explanations for not attending the call of the Spanish team.
«I hereby inform you that due to the latest events that have occurred in the Spanish team and the situation generated, facts of which you are aware, are significantly affected my emotional state and therefore my health.
Due to all this, I currently do not see myself in a position to be a selectable player for our national team and for this reason I request not to be called up until the situation is reversed.
My commitment to the team in the past, present and future was, is and will be absolute. And I am the first who wants to achieve the maximum number of sporting successes for our team. I remain at your entire disposal for whatever you consider appropriate, always with the aim of seeking the best for our national team.
The letter is one more attempt to pressure Jorge Vilda leave his position without giving further explanations of the reasons that lead them to ask for his head. Some players were already involved in the dismissal of Lluis Cortes, former Barcelona coach, when they had won the sextet that same season.
Sources close to the situation indicate that “with Cortes they complained that it was very hard” and “now with Vilda they say that they train little.” The fact is that “They want absolute control of the selection and that is not done in any sport or in any category.”
The dedication of these players will make it easier for the Spanish team to take over after having been champions of the U-20 World Cup this year in Costa Rica. Jorge Vilda also maintains the support of Real Madrid and Ballon d’Or players Alexia Putellas.
