The socialist mayor of Palma, Jose Hilawill spend 1.3 million ecotax an influencer’s para promote Playa de Palma, with the aim of attracting nomads and digital residents on long stays as a new vacation and product segment touristaccording to the agreement approved today in an extraordinary Governing Board held in the morning.
A project that has been baptized as Digital Farm and which will have two main actions: the attraction of digital nomads and the promotion of this brand.
In order to materialize the first of the aforementioned objectives, it is proposed in the first place, identify hotels that can extend the season tourism and adapt to long stays that must have powerful Wi-Fi, spaces to do work, meeting rooms, laptops, videoconference offices, integrative office furniture and, also, other tangible and intangible elements for an appropriate segmentation (healthy life, gym , gastronomy, games room, streaming, recording room, aesthetic icons and icons related to lifestyles and emerging tribes…).
Another of the key elements of this initiative would involve the design, creation, planning and implementation of revitalization events that activate Playa de Palma in mid and low season and that show a new face of the destination, focused on knowledge, technology, innovation.
This action also includes the redesign of the beach area to convert it into an attraction for all kinds of sports in mid and low season, as well as the launch of an external communication plan in fairs, events, social networks, press, radio, SEO, influencers, magazines, specialized press and advertising campaigns.
Activate new tourism products
The project to attract a critical and visible mass of digital nomads in long stays over three years and during the mid and low season will have a direct impact, according to the Consistory, on the deseasonalization and activation of new tourism products.
Also betting on the creation of a digital and technological ecosystem in which digital nomads can develop their activity, start-ups and new tourism companies could be attracted that provide service to this new type of tourist, which will have a positive impact on improving training and the quality of employment.
Although the area of Tourism, Health and Consumption of the City Council is the one who presents this project, once approved, the Palma 365 Tourism Foundation will be the one who executes it for an area such as Playa de Palma, the most notorious and important destination of Balearic tourism, classic brand of the world leader in holiday tourism (Balearic Islands) and cradle of important international tourist chains born in Mallorca.
Only 1.5 million of the ecotax of the 52 collected has been invested
A sui generis project for a Playa de Palma abandoned by the Palma City Council and the Balearic Government of the also socialist Francina Armengol, who in these two legislatures will only have invested 1.5 million in the area in two projects not yet executed, charged to the ecotax, of the total of 52 collected for overnight stays at hotels in the area between 2016 and 2019.
A non-existent investment during these seven years and that would have to be directed at the reform of existing infrastructures, such as lighting, streets, asphalt, mobility, signage, electricity connections, telecommunications and accessibility.
The projects in charge of the Govern ecotax were compromised due to the Covid in 2020, and although some of them were marked as strategic and continued to be carried out, others, as has happened in the case of Playa de Palma, were suspended .
