Apple is apparently planning another version of its Apple Watch this year, which will be released alongside the Standard and Edition models and the Apple Watch SE. Corresponding rumors have been around for a few months, but now they seem to have been confirmed.
As Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman reported on Wednesday evening, citing informed circles, Apple is planning “its biggest smartwatch to date”. The display of this “Apple Watch Extreme Sports” is to grow to almost 2 inches diagonally, which corresponds to around seven percent more screen area with a resolution of 410 by 502 pixels. With this, more fitness data could be displayed at the same time. WatchOS 9 recently brought new tracking features for running and triathlon, among other things. Furthermore, the new watch version, which Apple wants to market explicitly to athletes, should have a larger battery for longer workout tracking and a stronger “rugged” metal housing, which is even more stable than current models. The display should also be shatterproof.
The regular “Series 8”, which is also expected in autumn, will remain with the approximately 1.9-inch screen diagonal that the current Apple Watch Series 7 has in the 45 mm version. Apple had enlarged the display on the Series 7, the only real hardware change in the past year. Gurman continues to say that there will also be an update for the entry-level Apple Watch, the SE – the size of the display remains unchanged here.
Apple Watch increasingly important
It is also suspected that Apple will probably give its “Series 8” a temperature measurement function. This is in the standard version and the “Extreme Sports” watch. Other improvements concern the sensors used for altitude measurement and float detection. With the integrated System-in-a-Package (SiP), Apple is said to be sticking with the “S8” with similar performance values to the S7 from 2021, which in turn is very similar to the S6 from 2020. Apple would hardly have changed its SiP for the Watch for three years.
Apple is now selling enormous numbers of its computer watch and has even overtaken Rolex and Co. The Apple product line, under which it is classified, accounts for 10 percent of total sales. The computer watch came onto the market for the first time in 2015 – as the first truly new product category after the death of company founder Steve Jobs.
