The telly is on all the time – or the YouTube streaming on the cell phone and tablet, and the children post a short story on Instagram or Tiktok while the parents are just checking the e-mail inbox again. Afterwards a round of paddling to relax. At what point is that too much, what does balanced media use look like?
This year’s Safer Internet Day 2023 raised the issue of sensible use of digital media. The events and campaigns of the participating facilities, institutions and companies rely on the hashtags #OnlineAmLimit and #SID2023, under which content and discussions can be found online. Safer Internet Day started as part of the EU SafeBorders project in 2004 and is now celebrated in around 180 countries around the world. This year the project celebrates its twentieth edition.
Safer Internet Day: Focus on children and young people
On Safer Internet Day, institutions want to support children and young people in particular in using digital media in a self-determined and responsible manner. According to the Klicksafe project, which collects and coordinates the campaigns in Germany, the goals include, in addition to the specific focus, the motivation of people of all age groups to deal with security on the Internet.
According to Klicksafe, the overarching motto is “Better internet for kids”. For lessons and extracurricular youth work, the project provides a “Digital Detox Box” that contains a collection of methods for educational work. Parents receive handouts on the website that support them in dialogue about media use in the family. The map for Safer Internet Day lists a total of around 270 events or campaigns, which are also available in a list view.
