The Hyundai Group is resolutely pushing ahead with the distribution of its 800-volt platform for electric cars to various brands. After Hyundai and Kia, it is now the turn of models from Genesis. The GV60 and G80 are followed by the GV70 SUV, and the G70 station wagon with battery-electric drive is also coming onto the market.
The SUV GV70 will be extremely powerful, at least as a starter model. An electric motor with 160 kW each is installed at the front and rear. In a boost mode, at least one of the two must be able to do even more, because in this Genesis promises a total output of 360 kW. The maximum torque of 350 Nm in each case does not increase any further in boost mode. According to internal measurements by Genesis, the electric SUV, which certainly weighs well over two tons, accelerates from standstill to 100 km / h in 4.5 seconds.
All information is only provisional, which also applies to the range. Genesis names more than 500 km, determined using the Chinese measuring method. In the Korean EV certification system, it is an estimated 400 km. Genesis promises a time of 18 minutes for the charge from 10 to 80 percent. A test of the Hyundai Ioniq 5 recently revealed, however, that ideal conditions are required for such charging times and that the preconditioning of the battery via the charging strategy is still in need of improvement.
The press release does not provide any direct information on the charging capacity or the energy content of the battery. It is obvious that the GV70 gets the battery of the Kia EV6 with 77 kWh. The option of tapping the battery supply with up to 3.6 kW has also been adopted from the other models – practical, for example, on very large properties at the end of which you want to cut a hedge.
Anti-noise and foresight
By no means new, but only rarely installed is a form of special noise reduction. Four sensors and four microphones record the noise level in the interior and generate a counter-sound through the vehicle loudspeakers. Ideally, the artificial counter-sound waves cancel out the original ones. Ford has been installing this in the Mondeo Hybrid for many years. According to the Genesis, Hyundai also puts a lot of effort into the chassis. Data from the navigation system and the front camera are processed for predictive chassis control.
In Europe probably from 2022
On the occasion of the world premiere at Auto Guangzhou 2021 in China (until November 28), Genesis does not provide any information about when the electric SUV will be launched in Europe, let alone at what price. A first trip with the G80 last summer showed one thing very clearly: It would be a gross mistake to underestimate this brand.
