For a long time, the Music therapy and its benefits in patients admitted to the ICU It is studied and implanted in different hospitals. The Hospital del Mar Intensive Care Medicine Service, in collaboration with the Hospital del Mar Medical Research Institute, has launched a research project on this subject.
The Hospital del Mar ICU has a long history of applying applied music therapy to its patients. An experience that was interrupted by the covid pandemic, which forced a large part of the humanization projects in this space to stop.
What is music therapy based on in patients admitted to the ICU
A musical program adapted to each patient individually is applied to respond to their situation, evolution and responsiveness. It seeks to help their evolution, reduce stress levels and facilitate their interaction with their environment.
In patients diagnosed with delirium
The study, which has now been launched, will focus on patients diagnosed with delirium, hyperactive or hypoactive, and will analyze the effect of music therapy in reducing the incidence of delirium in these patients.
According to those responsible for the hospital, delirium is a frequent and serious consequence of patients requiring ICU admission and is associated with serious complications and longer hospital stays.
To make this possible, saliva samples will be collected before and after the intervention to analyze certain metabolites that function as indicators of the patient’s levels of stress and well-being in order to determine the benefits of the action on their condition.
It is noteworthy that the ICU of the Hospital del Mar is pioneer in applying a humanization program care for hospitalized people with the aim of improving their treatment and their evolution.
There are already some therapies that have been possible and are effective, such as therapeutic outings to see the sea (which is in front of the hospital), in the company of family and friends.
Another thing is to use virtual reality technology to improve your mood and help in physical recovery exercises and work is done to allow the entry of therapeutic animals.
For this reason, such projects help the patient as long as they receive the support of the family. As we can see, it is important to be aware of these projects, which are possible thanks to the philanthropy of the Manuel Lao Foundation and the collaboration of the Fundació Amics de l’Hospital del Mar, which have made it possible to recover the initiative with music therapists linked to Huella Sonora Musicoterapia .
