Apple relies on continuous updates for its Mac operating system: In addition to regular updates and patches, a new major version with function upgrades has been released every year for almost a decade, most recently macOS 12 Monterey. You can see that critically: On the one hand, because the upgrades often cause problems until the first or second maintenance update. And on the other hand, because the manufacturer from Cupertino takes the annual opportunity to declare old Macs obsolete in order to sell new ones.
The “retired” Macs are often relatively old devices. Nevertheless, circumcision sometimes seems arbitrary. The current macOS 12 Monterey cuts support for iMac and MacBook (Pro) built before 2015, Mac mini before the end of 2014 and Mac Pro before the end of 2013. Why a top-equipped 2013 iMac or a MacBook that is still compatible with macOS 11 Big Sur Many users do not realize that the Pro 15” of the same vintage should no longer be suitable for Monterey.
Why Apple is making old Macs obsolete
One of the main reasons is that old devices no longer support one or the other feature on the hardware side. For example, Apple’s in-house Metal graphics API was one reason not to use older Macs any more: the graphics cards installed years ago lack some of the hardware functions required for Metal. But slow USB interfaces, old WLAN and Bluetooth standards or missing SSDs can also be the reason why Apple decides to scrap a Mac model. In addition, the effort for troubleshooting and support for the many hardware components involved, and from third-party providers at that, should also be too high for Apple.
