The La Caixa Foundation announced yesterday that it will allocate 50 million euros a year to social action in Portugal, fulfilling the commitment made in 2017 to extend its activity to the neighboring country after the purchase of BPI. The president of the La Caixa Foundation, Isidro Fainé, met this Thursday in Lisbon with the President of the Portuguese Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, and with the country’s Prime Minister, António Costa, to whom he explained the activity carried out during the last five years of the Foundation in Portugal.
The president of the Foundation highlighted: “As part of our model, we want to contribute to the well-being of people and the advancement of the territories in which we are present. Five years after our arrival in Portugal, we are very satisfied with the consolidation of our social action. Portugal is a country whose socio-economic development we are committed to with full conviction, but there is still a lot to be done, so today we also want to renew our commitment”.
The La Caixa Foundation maintains its greatest international activity in Portugal. In the five years of activity of the entity, the organization of Catalan origin has invested more than 136 million euros in the country for social, scientific, educational and cultural initiatives, as explained this Thursday by the main shareholder of CaixaBank through a statement .
The Foundation points out that it has opted for programs that have a greater social impact and those that guarantee a greater transformative impact. “Among these objectives, collaboration to improve the living conditions of the most vulnerable children, promoting active aging of the elderly, facilitating access to employment for disadvantaged groups and ensuring comprehensive care for patients with advanced diseases, as well as the contribution to the well-being of people with disabilities or at risk of exclusion”, explains the organization in a statement.
Some of these projects are the Humaniza program, a translation in Portugal of the Comprehensive Care for People with Advanced Diseases program, which seeks to improve the quality of care for people who are at the end of their lives, as well as their families. Also, through labor integration projects, among which the Incorpora program stands out, the entity promotes the hiring of groups with special difficulties in finding a job, such as people with disabilities, the long-term unemployed, young people at risk of exclusion, women victims of gender violence and migrants, among others. Proinfancia is one of the entity’s strategic programs with the aim of fighting child poverty. The mission of the Senior Citizens program is to promote the social participation of this group, give value to their experience and place them as an active protagonist in our society, among other activities.
