The protocol of Ministry of Health does not contemplate being able to immunize five people with each monkeypox vaccine, as the Community of Madrid has requested this Wednesday.
“As a public health strategy, There is scientific evidence that vaccinating a greater number of people with a single dose is more effective than vaccinating half with two doses, ”justifies the Ministry in a document on vaccination against monkeypox published on Tuesday.
Specifically, the community chaired by Isabel Díaz Ayuso has asked the Ministry to follow in the footsteps of the United States, whose Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has given the go-ahead to extract five doses from each vial of vaccine to multiply the number of beneficiaries “due to the shortage of this preventive treatment.”
Since last May, the Department of Health of the Community of Madrid has asked the Ministry for a “sufficient supply” to apply this treatment to the population at risk, and to date it has only received 1,835, pending the new remittance announced by the Government.
Today, 1,504 people have been immunized in Madrid against monkeypox at the two authorized pointsthe Regional Vaccination Center, which has been injecting the doses since mid-July, and the Isabel Zendal Nursing Public Hospital, which has been doing so since yesterday.
vaccination against monkeypox as pre-exposure prophylaxis is indicated as a priority for a specific group of the population, people of 18 to 45 years oldwho engage in high-risk sexual practices and meet the established indication criteria.
From the Ministry, its report establishes that the vaccination schedule for the monkeypox vaccine «consists of two doses administered at least 28 days apart». “Studies in animals and in humans show that the first dose of the vaccine already provides basic protection against monkeypox. The second dose of the vaccine serves mainly to prolong the duration of protection of the vaccine. Immunological studies have shown that immunological protection after the first dose decreases from 2 years after vaccination.and then a second dose of vaccine may be necessary for longer-lasting protection, ”explains Health.
Likewise, the document Health Remember that the technical data sheets of these vaccines indicate that the vaccination schedule is “two doses, administered subcutaneously, with an interval of at least 28 days between them.”
The protocol of the Ministry states that protection is considered to be complete two weeks after vaccination. For people previously vaccinated against smallpox, only one dose will be given.
Given the limited availability of vaccines, The Public Health Commission has established the recommendation to administer a dosein any of the two strategies used (pre or exposure).
