This week the news of a resident of the town of Es Castell (Menorca) has gone viral who, to save money for the mooring, opted to Store your six-meter-long boat on the terrace of your home, located on the third floor of a building. To go up and place the crane on the terrace, he needed a crane, but the story has not ended anywhere near as he expected.
Parking a boat on a terrace?
Through social networks, the owner of the boat has explained how he came up with the idea. He wanted to save mooring money during the winter months and, in addition, to be able to spend more time preparing the boat. “I save 70 euros a month during the five winter months and I repair it from home,” he explained.
But is this legal? According to him, yes. He assures that he can go up and park the boat on the terrace of his house, since its weight is up to ten times less than what the structure can support. After learning about the situation, technicians from the Urban Planning area of the Es Castell City Council went to the house.
Finally, they determined that the neighbor had to remove the boat from the terrace. And it is that, in addition to the danger it entails in terms of safety, the owner of the boat did not request any public occupation permit for the crane. To this we must add that the terrace of a house does not have a nautical or industrial use, as indicated by the Municipal Council.
For these reasons, gave him a period of 24 hours to remove the boat. “We hope that it complies with the 24-hour period that has been given, since otherwise it must be the city council that acts ex officio and transfers the cost of the operation to the neighbor,” the Consistory specified.
Finally, the neighbor has been forced to remove the boat by his own means. Whether you are going to have to pay a fine will depend on legal services, although since you have complied with the order, you most likely will not have to.
Following this news, it should be noted that there are many places where you can store a boat in the winter months: a municipal port, a private port, a garage, a dry dock… The dry dock is a nautical facility where small boats are stored on land.
