Jay Vogler builds kinetic objects with an artistic approach. This includes structures that can paint and write or deal creatively with mechanics in other ways – the main thing is that they move. The qualified mechanical engineer, who describes himself as an engineeronaut (a mixture of engineer, artist and astronaut), shows how his creations work and what thoughts went into their construction on his YouTube channel JBV Creative.
His latest project is a pendulum clock that is almost entirely 3D printed and runs for just over 6 days before needing to be rewound. In the accompanying video, Vogler guides you step by step through its construction, explains various principles of watch mechanics and goes into the details of his own design. It’s entertaining, educational and inspiring at the same time.
Those who want to delve deeper into the design can purchase the clock as STL files from the JBV Creative website for $19.99. The mechanisms from Vogler’s other videos are also available there.
