The Max Planck Institute for Computer Science and the search engine provider Google will be working together in Saarbrücken over the next few years to develop even more “intelligent” computers. According to the institute on Tuesday, both sides decided on a strategic partnership to establish a research center.
This center (Saarbrücken Research Center for Visual Computing, Interaction and Artificial Intelligence/VIA) will conduct basic research in the areas of computer graphics, computer vision and the interaction between man and machine. The Max Planck Institute for Computer Science announced that it was also about artificial intelligence and machine learning.
Google finances for four years with an option to extend
The cooperation is long-term, it said. The initial funding from Google will run for four years and will be renewed thereafter. “Important methodological foundations for intelligent, interactive, immersive and autonomous computer systems of the future are to be developed,” said the future head of the VIA and scientific director at the Max Planck Institute for Computer Science, Christian Theobalt.
These computer systems should be able to support people in their private and working lives in the future. In particular, advanced approaches in visual data processing, human-machine interaction and artificial intelligence are used to create the basis for new ways of communicating and interacting with and via computer systems of the future.
Google wants new and improved algorithms
Google expects the research center to provide new and improved algorithms for advanced functional capabilities in these areas. Shahram Izadi, Senior Director and Head of AR at Google, also wants algorithms to be developed that are easier to explain, more robust and more trustworthy.
Saarland’s Prime Minister Anke Rehlinger (SPD) welcomed the research partnership. The combination of top research and top companies could become the nucleus of scientific knowledge and economic strength. With numerous research institutions, Saarland sees itself as one of the leading locations for IT in Germany and Europe.
