GitLab customers will have to dig much deeper into their pockets for the premium version in the future: GitLab Premium will cost $29 instead of $19 per user per month from April. The price for the Ultimate offer, meanwhile, remains at $99 per month per user. The Free Tier will also remain available for free.

evolution of the platform

GitLab cites the numerous additions to the offer as the reason for the price increase. Since the last price increase a good five years ago, GitLab has evolved from a version control and CI (continuous integration) platform to the “most comprehensive DevSecOps platform”.

The price increase blog post talks about over 400 features that have been added to GitLab Premium since the price change in February 2018, including pipeline enhancements, functions for controlling releases and compliance.

In terms of timing, it may seem a bit unfavorable that the most recent GitLab release 15.9 has few innovations that specifically apply to the premium version. The biggest changes like guest access and a beta of code completion suggestions are reserved for Ultimate customers, while other innovations like the integration of OpenID Connect for CI/CD workflows apply to all variants including Free.

Transition phase for existing customers

The price increase will come into effect on April 3, 2023. For existing customers, the price increase will take effect in two stages: until April 2, 2024, they will initially pay 24 US dollars per month per user.

Like many IT companies, GitLab is likely to be under financial pressure overall. In February, the company’s managing director, Sid Sijbrandij, announced that seven percent of the workforce would be laid off. One of the main competitors, Microsoft’s subsidiary GitHub, had announced at the same time that it would be separating ten percent of its employees.
