A meeting between the former Minister of Public Works with the PP and former President of the Principality of Asturias by Foro Asturias, Francisco Alvarez-Cascosand the general secretary of the PP of Asturias, Álvaro Queipo, has unleashed all kinds of speculation about the return of Cascos to Feijóo’s PP. The former minister has assured that he feels “admiration” for the figure of the current president of the PP and assures that he will help him “unconditionally to straighten the course of Spain.”
Cascos has assured in an interview that he goes through Asturias “without a hood” and that he is not going to hide to see anyone or ask permission to do so. It is not new either, he has added, that he has known the current president of the PP at the national level for many years, Alberto Núñez Feijóo. «I feel admiration for him and I will support and help him unconditionally to straighten the course of Spain, because we are in a moment where it is going aimlessly and into a bottomless pit, ”he commented between criticisms of the Government of Pedro Sánchez. Faced with this model, he considers that Feijóo “represents hope.”
He has described certain reactions that have occurred after the meeting in the Asturian town of Castropol as “gossip,” he said in an interview on Radio Intereconomy. He believes that some Cascos, like the president of the Asturian Government, Adrian Barbónthey use it to “distract the focus” so that there is no talk of the demolition of the thermals, the reminder of the European Commission for high speed to have international width, or the loss of jobs at ArcelorMittal.
He has said that Barbón prefers «cover up or evade problems» before talking about the bad Asturian socioeconomic data. «We are not at the tail of Spain because a meteorite has fallen on us or because we have a biblical curse; this has been dug with pick and shovel from the Government of Spain with the enthusiastic collaboration of the Government of Asturias », he commented in reference to the situation in the Principality.
His departure from the PP
Álvarez-Cascos left the PP in 2011 and the Foro Asturias party emerged around him, which won the elections that year. Although he did not get an absolute majority, Cascos managed to be president of Asturias after the elections held in May. It was for a short time, because at the end of the year, after the regional budgets were rejected, the former Minister of Public Works decided to call new regional elections in Asturias. The elections were held on March 25 and the Forum lost strength, in such a way that the Government of the Principality returned to the hands of the PSOE, with Javier Fernandez as regional president.
Years later, in 2020, he was expelled from Foro Asturias and later announced his resignation. It was in the midst of a crisis in that party that he moved to the Asturian parliament. There, the spokesperson for Foro Asturias, Adrian Pumaresis secretary general of the Forum and follows the official line of formation currently chaired by Carmen Moriyon. But his parliamentary group partner, Pedro Leal, remains faithful to Cascos.
