The leader of the PP, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, has portrayed this Tuesday the Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, as a kamikaze against the reality of the street, where families are becoming poorer. In his first parliamentary face-to-face meeting, the PP leader launched the head of the social-communist government: “He looks more and more like a driver going in the opposite direction.”
This has been the first parliamentary duel between Sánchez and Feijóo and it has taken place two months after the second was elected president of the PP in the extraordinary Congress held in Seville that ended the stage of Pablo Casado.
Feijóo, who took possession of his seat in the Senate two weeks ago by autonomous appointment of the Parliament of Galicia, registered the following question for his premiere: «Does the President of the Government consider that his Executive is up to the needs of families Spanish?», collects the order of the day.
This literalness already gave clues to the matter on which Feijóo was going to focus. With an inflation that has rebounded in May to 8.7% due to the rise in fuel and food, the PP has been denouncing that the recipes of the Sánchez Government are not “working”, for which it has offered to apply those included in the economic plan that Feijóo sent to Moncloa a month ago. An alternative document based on the tax reduction, for example, 5% for VAT on electricity or gas. It also proposes deflating personal income tax.
In this context, the PP has already advanced that it will not support the extension until October of the anti-war decree being prepared by the Council of Ministers if the social communists do not sign some of these proposals. In the original decree and after their demands were ignored, the popular did not abstain and voted against.
Unlike Congress, where Sánchez submits to parliamentary control most weeks, the presence of the chief executive in the Senate is less, since the president has been violating the unwritten rule that was established with José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero of going to the upper house at least once a month.
The leader of the PP has installed his office as head of the opposition in the Upper House from which he will direct the work of the Parliamentary Group in the General Courts. Specifically, the one occupied until now by the fourth secretary of the Table, Cristina Ayala, senator of the PP for Burgos. In fact, Feijóo intends to attend the plenary sessions whenever his agenda allows it and not look for spaces that do not correspond to him, alluding to Congress, according to sources from his team. Javier Maroto continues as spokesman for the group, appointed in his day by Pablo Casado, and the new general secretary of the group is Amelia Salanueva, senator for Navarra.
