The Volvo brand Polestar delivers iPhone integration in the Polestar 2 vehicle model: The latest update made available online also brings support for Apple CarPlay, as the manufacturer announced on Twitter on Wednesday. Polestar customers can thus use their iPhone via the electric vehicle’s infotainment system, including for navigation, music, communication and other apps – as well as to use Apple’s Siri voice assistant system.
CarPlay als Over-The-Air-Update
CarPlay is now available “over the air” (OTA), says Polestar, i.e. can be installed directly via the on-board system. However, the update will be delivered “in batches”. Whether it is already available for the first customers in Germany remains unclear for the time being. Alternatively, it should be possible to have the software update installed at a Polestar dealer. CarPlay apparently only works on the Polestar 2 via a wired connection and not wirelessly.
The Polestar 2 is one of the first vehicles to use Google’s Android Automotive operating system and support Apple CarPlay – but not yet for Android Auto to connect an Android smartphone. CarPlay support is still missing in Volvo vehicle series with Android Automotive.
Polestar support for Apple CarPlay 2
Polestar was also one of the first vehicle manufacturers to announce future support for Apple’s next generation of CarPlay, which will extend across the entire dashboard and enable direct control of vehicle functions such as air conditioning and heated seats. Polestar has not yet given any specific details, so it remains to be seen whether appropriate support can also be provided via software update. According to Apple, the first cars with CarPlay 2 will not be announced until the end of 2023, so they are unlikely to be found on the street or at dealers before 2024.
