Disney’s latest feature film, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, is coming to Disney+ on June 22nd. There it will be available to all subscribers without additional payment. So there are less than 50 days between the theatrical release and the start of streaming.
In the past few years, Disney has repeatedly requested additional payments if you wanted to see films that had just been shown in the cinema on the streaming service in a timely manner. For “Mulan” Disney 2020 asked about 22 euros in addition to the subscription fees, only three months later the film became part of the regular subscription. Recently, Disney has refrained from this strategy.
For years, cinema chains have been at odds with media groups like Disney, which are shrinking cinema exclusivity windows in favor of their own streaming services. Many chains are also facing bankruptcy due to the additional burden of the corona pandemic.
Disney+ with advertising
Meanwhile, Disney plans to attract even more users to membership with an advertising-supported subscription to Disney+. Disney+ plans to have 230 to 260 million members by fiscal 2024, Disney said. Disney+ currently has 130 million members, well behind Netflix with around 222 million users.
This subscription version should be available for lower monthly fees, the company said – so it will not be free. The market launch of the Disney+ subscription with ads is planned for the end of 2022 in the USA.
The Disney subscription with advertising should then become available internationally in 2023. It is still unclear how much subscribers save if they are willing to watch ads. Disney+ currently costs 9 euros a month, and the annual subscription costs 90 euros.
