Bearing in mind that the use of mobile phones while driving is one of the main causes of traffic accidents on Spanish roads, the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) has become serious about it. On March 21, 2022, the new Traffic Law entered into force, which penalizes not only talking on the phone while driving, but also carrying it in your hand. A gesture that can be very expensive!
Carry your mobile in your hand while driving
The reform contemplates several pointsso we are going to explain them one by one so that you have everything clear.
If the phone is in an approved support and you manipulate it in circulation, the fine is 200 euros. In addition, it entails the loss of three points of the driving license.
If you drive holding the phone in your handfor example listening to or recording a voice note on WhatsApp, the fine is also 200 euros, but in this case the loss of points is six.
The regulations provide that if you stop at a traffic light or in a traffic jam you are also on the roadregardless of whether the vehicle is moving or not. Therefore, if you do not want to expose yourself to a fine, do not take advantage of these moments to check the phone.
The Article 11.3 of the General Traffic Regulations establishes the following: «The use of mobile phone devices and any other means or system of communication while driving is prohibited, except when the development of the communication takes place without using the hands or using helmets, headphones or similar instruments».
The main distraction behind the wheel
There are those who consider that nothing happens to read a WhatsApp message while driving, but, judging by the data offered by the DGT, this is a very dangerous practice.
A vehicle traveling at 120 kilometers per hour travels 34 meters in just one second.. At the beginning of 2022, the DGT published a tweet with the following question: “Do you know how many meters you travel without control of the 🚗🚚🚌 when you try to answer #mobile or other #distractions? »
To raise awareness of how dangerous it is to use the phone while driving, he has created a platform where you can see how many meters you walk when you are distracted. For example, when sending a WhatsApp, 600 meters traveling at 120 kilometers per hour.
Click on the link, choose the type of distraction and move the vehicle up to the number of meters you think it travels.
