The current DHCP server from the Internet Systems Consortium (ISC) is called Kea. The open source server replaces the ISC's previous DHCP server. Unlike its predecessor, Kea-DHCP offers a clean and fast implementation of the DHCPv4 and DHCPv6 protocols. The modular server can be expanded with so-called hook modules. Kea accepts configuration changes without restarting and can manage the data it uses in an external “backend” database if desired.

The ISC recommends using Kea in new facilities. If you still use ISC-DHCP, you should think about migrating to Kea. However, new setup or migration is not an easy undertaking. To take full advantage of Kea's advantages, you should be well versed in DHCPv6.
The c't workshop “Introduction to the Kea DHCP Server” teaches everything you need to know for setup and operation over two days. It provides a complete introduction to the new Kea DHCP software on Unix and Linux systems. Participants learn how to install Kea, configure it appropriately and maintain it comprehensively. The basics are not neglected either: In addition to a refresher on DHCPv4, the DHCPv6 protocol in particular is discussed in detail in the workshop so that participants can then benefit as much as possible from Kea's capabilities.
Designed with Kea developers
The workshop was designed in collaboration with ISC and the Kea development team. It is aimed at Linux/Unix system administrators who want to replace an existing ISC-DHCP server with Kea-DHCP or are planning to reinstall a DHCP server. Participants should master the basics of the Unix/Linux command line and be familiar with a Unix/Linux editor on the text console. You should also have a basic knowledge of the DHCPv4 protocol and basic networking knowledge (Unix/Linux TCP/IP).
The online workshop will be conducted via Zoom and using a GDPR-compliant on-premise connector. Participants only need a microphone or headset and an up-to-date browser. The event will take place on June 5th and 6th, 2024 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Anyone who secures a ticket now can take part at the early bird price of 1,395.00 euros. All information about the process and registration can be found on the workshop page.
