After a completely free test phase, the chatbot ChatGPT gets a subscription business model called ChatGPT Plus. For 20 US dollars, around 18.15 euros, per month, paying customers should have reliable access to the software and faster results even with high workloads, the developer company OpenAI promises in a blog entry on Wednesday. Another benefit is early access to future new features and improvements.

ChatGPT is artificial intelligence (AI) based software that has been trained on large amounts of text and data to generate answers to questions in human language. This includes writing articles, speeches and stories as well as programming software.

ChatGPT creates deceptively real human texts, so there are concerns, among other things, that it could be used to cheat on school and university assignments or to create large-scale disinformation campaigns. OpenAI therefore presented a text classifier that should be able to recognize texts written by computers.

The large rush of users in recent weeks has temporarily overloaded the system. ChatGPT Plus customers should not have any problems with this. The subscription model will initially only be available in the USA, but will be introduced in other countries “soon”. ChatGPT emphasized that there should continue to be free access to the software. The subscription income should finance the service for as many users as possible. OpenAI also has a multi-billion dollar deal with Microsoft, in which the group integrates the company’s programs into its cloud platform.

Every fourth internet user in Germany knows ChatGPT

In Germany, ChatGPT is now known to every fourth person who uses the Internet at least occasionally. This was the result of a representative survey by the Bochum research facility CAIS (Center for Advanced Internet Studies) published on Thursday.

In the “Opinion Monitor Artificial Intelligence” only three percent of those surveyed said that they use ChatGPT regularly. At least eight percent have already tried the chat bot. 17 percent have at least heard of it. 65 percent said they had never heard of ChatGPT.

According to the survey, the private use of the AI-based language model is the main focus for users who use the language software regularly or only occasionally. More than half of the ChatGPT users state that they use ChatGPT privately, a quarter of the users already use the chatbot professionally. Only about 11 percent of this group use ChatGPT for school, training or study. If you look at the group of regular users, a different picture emerges: Here, almost a third of the use takes place in connection with activities at school or university.

Overall, according to the survey, people in Germany are mostly positive about ChatGPT technology. More than half of those surveyed say they are impressed. This group is positive about ChatGPT’s potential for support in many areas. However, almost 50 percent of those surveyed are also worried about possible effects on the workplace or people being displaced by machines. Around 48 percent of those surveyed are also concerned about the protection of their own privacy and a possible violation of data protection regulations.
