Only two years after Can-Am was founded as a motorcycle brand, in 1974, a Can-Am won the American Motocross Championship in the class up to 250cc. But already in 1987 it was over with the motorcycle production. From then on, the Canadian group Bombardier Recreational Products (BRP) concentrated on its core business: jet skis, snowmobiles, quads and light off-road vehicles (ATV). In 2007, the first on-road vehicle with the Can-Am label followed: the Spyder with two wheels in front and one wheel in back. The Can-Am Spyder is powered by Rotax engines, because the Austrian engine manufacturer Rotax also belongs to BRP.
New Can-Am motorcycles coming in 2024
50 years after the introduction of the first Can-Am motorcycles, new Can-Am motorcycles are announced. Although only for 2024, the announcement fits in better with the 50th anniversary of the brand in 2022. Two models are being developed – both with electric drives from Rotax. The Can-Am Origin concept is an enduro, which seems plausible given the history of the brand. At the same time, however, a roadster called Can-Am Pulse is being developed.
Electrically powered by Rotax E-Power
Key data are not yet available, but the first pictures and the designation E-Power for the electric Rotax drive suggest a certain dynamic potential, at least on the level of previous mid-range motorcycles with combustion engines. The first pictures on both models show the single-armed rear wheel swing arm with an integrated, encapsulated final drive, either with a chain or with a toothed belt. The electric motor is positioned directly on the swing arm bearing and in front of it, with as low a center of gravity as possible, is the battery pack. Gear lever and clutch lever are not present as they are not required. Handlebar switch and large display in the cockpit suggest modern equipment. Interesting background on the topic: In 2019, BRP took over the Californian electric motorcycle manufacturer Alta – and probably at least some of its know-how too.
New Can-Am plant in Mexico
On October 3, 2022, construction of a new plant began in Querétaro, Mexico. From March 2024, the new electric motorcycles of the Can-Am brand will be produced there – complete with batteries. This will create around 500 new jobs. There is already a BRP plant nearby for other vehicles and parts.
If so, then only a powerful electric motorcycle.
I can imagine an electric scooter for commuting and city traffic.
A small, manoeuvrable electric moped is definitely fun.
Can-Am – a melodious old and new name in the motorcycle business. Two electric motorcycles from Can-Am are announced for 2024, a roadster and an enduro. This announcement is to be taken seriously, because behind Can-Am stands the large Canadian Bombardier group. In the fall of 2022, construction began on a new plant in Mexico, where the motorcycles and batteries are to be produced from March 2024.
