Water and architecture belong together. For the photographer anyway, just think of the reflection of buildings in a smooth surface. In the Münsterland you will find a particularly large number of such attractive combinations with the moated castles – for historical reasons.
From a purely historical point of view, most of these ensembles were built as castles. One can only speak of castles from the end of the Middle Ages. The difference: the use of the walls is changing from protection and fortification to representation. From this point of view, almost all moated castles today are actually moated castles, since their owners had them rebuilt in the Renaissance or later Baroque style for representation purposes from around 1500.
Interestingly, most owners and occupants of the buildings almost universally prefer the term “moated castle”, while the Münsterland region prefers to tout the “moated castles”. We have visited the moated castles of Assen House, Huelenhoff Castle and Anholt Castle for you.
