Toyota has once again maintained its top position as an automaker in global sales. According to the company, which also includes the small car specialist Daihatsu and the commercial vehicle manufacturer Hino Motors, it sold 10.48 million vehicles worldwide last year. That is 0.1 percent less than in the previous year.
Chip crisis hit both favorites
Despite the supply bottlenecks, especially for semiconductors as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, Toyota kept its production at a high level in 2022. It rose by 5.3 percent over the previous year to 10.61 million vehicles. Due to the global chip crisis, Volkswagen had to accept a drop in sales of 7.0 percent to almost 8.26 million vehicles last year. Despite a slight decline in earnings, Toyota was able to keep its long-time rival Volkswagen at a distance, which last made it to the top in 2017.
From April 1, 2023, Koji Sato is to take over the official business from long-time Toyota boss Akio Toyoda. The 66-year-old Toyoda will then move to the position of chairman of the board. Toyoda is the grandson of Kiichiro Toyoda, who together with Eiji Toyoda founded the Toyota company on August 28, 1937.
