Amazon is reportedly working on a new series of the Tomb Raider franchise. In December last year, the games division of the shipping giant, in cooperation with Crystal Dynamics, announced a new Lara Croft adventure with an as yet unknown title. The HBO series The Last of Us, also a video game adaptation, has been officially renewed for a second season.
“Tomb Raider”-Serie
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Amazon has signed Phoebe Waller-Bridge from the series “Fleabag” for the “Tomb Raider” series. The Amazon series won multiple Golden Globes and six Emmys in 2019 — one for lead actress Waller-Bridge, who also rewrote the first season for “Fleabag” (based on a play of the same name) and produced the pilot. Waller-Bridge has been commissioned to write the screenplays for the Lara Croft series, according to sources at The Hollywood Reporter, and has no plans for his own role.
No reliable information has been released about the cast, so Waller-Bridge will be executive producing in addition to writing. In addition to her successes in Fleabag, she has also written the screenplay for the James Bond film No Time To Die and has a role in the forthcoming fifth Indiana Jones film Destiny’s Call. Two days ago it was announced that the actress and screenwriter has extended her contract with Amazon for a further three years, including to adapt her book “Sign Here” as an Amazon series.
So far, Tomb Raider has appeared in the three feature films “Lara Croft: Tomb Raider” (2001) (from €7.76), “Lara Croft Tomb Raider – Die Wiege des Lebens” (2003) (from €9.90) – both with Angelina Jolie as the main actress – and filmed “Tomb Raider” (2018) (from €6.97) with Alicia Vikander as Lara Croft. With Vikander, a sequel “Tomb Raider 2” was originally planned for 2021, before MGM hesitated after disappointing box office results of the previous part, then missed dates to start shooting and finally lost the film rights due to the expired deadline.
“The Last of Us”
The HBO series The Last of Us has been renewed for a second season. The launch, which is based on Naughty Dog’s two-part video game series, “is HBO’s second-biggest series launch after House of the Dragon,” according to a press release. The same applies to the series in Germany on Sky and the associated streaming service WOW. The first two episodes of the first season are available there so far – the premiere of the third episode is next Monday.
“I’m impressed, honored and frankly blown away that so many people tuned in and connected to our retelling of Joel and Ellie’s journey,” said Neil Druckmann, Executive Producer. The cast, crew and HBO would have exceeded his already high expectations. The second season should repeat the success.
