According to the company, the US group Amazon increased its green electricity production worldwide by 8.3 gigawatts last year. Overall, the company’s generation capacity now amounts to more than 20 gigawatts, as announced by Amazon Germany on Tuesday in Munich. According to the announcement, that would be enough to supply 15.3 million European households with electricity.
Amazon’s board of directors wants all operations to be powered by 100 percent renewable energy by 2025. According to the company, there are currently 401 green power plants worldwide, including 164 wind and solar parks and 237 solar power plants on roofs. Their number should continue to rise. The wind and solar parks are intended to cover the in-house electricity needs, including the Amazon Web Services data centers and the logistics centers.
Amazon also announced other renewable energy projects to be launched this year, including eleven new projects in Europe with a total capacity of 372 megawatts (MW) in Germany, Finland, the UK, Italy and Spain, among others. The online retailer also wants to invest in two new offshore wind projects in Europe with a total capacity of 280 MW. Four new projects are to be advanced in the USA with a total output of 918 MW, including a solar project with integrated energy storage in California.
