Jose Luis Martinez-Almeida has directly invited the mayor of Philadelphia, Jim Kenney, to visit the capital of Spain immediately after learning that his counterpart in the main city of the state of Pennsylvania has been full of praise for Madrid. It was two days ago, in an appearance after a shooting in the North American city, when the elder assured that “Madrid is a wonderful place” in relation to the non-dangerousness of the Spanish capital compared to his city.
Almeida has publicly written to Kenney on social networks, lamenting “the recent events in his city” -two policemen were injured-, and being “happy to hear your words about Madrid”. Thus, he told her that “it will be a pleasure to receive you in Madrid, talk about our cities and, given your interest in football, invite you to see our ‘derby’, if you want”.
The fact is that Kenney appeared before the local press dressed in a Real Madrid shirt, which was what caught the attention of the journalists he attended, and they asked him about it. The mayor, who had come heartbroken by the shooting, changed the proud gesture of the Real Madrid shirt and recalled the good experience he had when he visited the Spanish capital. The mayor of Philadelphia emphasized that “Madrid was wonderful”, and he gave as an example: “I walked through Madrid at one in the morning, I walked…”, he continued, highlighting the absence of fear of any fright by armed individuals that is enjoyed on this side of the pond in this regard. Kenney could not continue commenting on his good memories of Madrid because the journalists immediately cut him off to ask him if he was worried about the situation in Philadelphia: “I’m worried any day, not just today,” Kenney concluded.
Kenney, in turn, replied to Almeida this Thursday, saying “thank you” and insisting that “I had a wonderful time earlier this year in Madrid. As the host city of the 2026 World Cup, I am sure that there is much that Philadelphia can learn from Madrid and Spain », he stressed.
Thank you, @AlmeidaPP_. I had a wonderful time in Madrid earlier this year. As a World Cup 2026 Host City, I’m sure there is much Philadelphia can learn from Madrid and Spain. https://t.co/0v3bQzKzIU
