The General Directorate of Emergencies and the Interior has activated the Severity index 1 (orange alert) of the Meteobal Plan due to snowfall and the Severity Index 2 (red alert) due to low temperatures from the height of 600 meters in the Serra de Tramuntana.
The activation of the alerts has been agreed this Friday at noon in the meeting with representatives of all the organizations involved in the management of this type of emergency, as well as with the mayors of the municipalities of the Serra de Tramuntana, to jointly assess the evolution of the phenomenon, pool the human and material resources available to them and coordinate joint actions that are considered necessary.
The measures adopted entail Prohibit all sports activities from the height of 600 meters in the Serra de Tramuntana and it is discouraged at lower levels. The Government, security forces and Emergency Services have advised citizens to find out about the state of the roads in view of the possibility of closures of some access roads.
The person in charge of the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) in the Balearic Islands, Maria Jose Guerrerohas reported on the forecast weather situation for the next few hours, assuring that “hail, precipitation, frost and accumulation of snow from an elevation of 600 meters in the Serra de Tramuntana are expected throughout the weekend”, collects the Europa Press agency.
Local police, Civil Guard, Civil Protection volunteers, DGT operators, Consell de Mallorca Highways and emergency technicians will watch over the entire weekend to guarantee safety on the roads of the Tramuntana and ensure easy access to services emergencies in case of an incident.
The General Directorate of Emergencies has recommended that residents of areas affected by snow be very careful when driving if ice sheets form and, if necessary, put the chains and drive with low gears and without abruptly changing direction. Given the declaration of the red alert by the General Directorate of Emergencies and the Interior due to low temperatures, the Balearic Institute of Nature (Ibanat) has canceled this weekend’s reservations for the refuges of the Serra de Tramuntana Natural Area.
