Telefónica will once again apply a rate increase for its fiber and mobile services of between one and three euros per month depending on the service contracted to Movistar customers as of January 15, as the operator has begun to communicate to its subscribers. . The company estimates that the average increase, taking into account all convergent (fiber, mobile and television) and non-convergent rate changes, is 3.1%. .
In this way, the increase is less than that applied by Movistar at the beginning of 2023, between 6 and 13 euros per month for the different services, with an average increase of 6.8%, in line with the increase in the general CPI the previous year. . The increase will not affect users who are enjoying a commercial promotion until the offer ends, when the new conditions will come into force. As already happened in the increase applied at the beginning of 2023, the increase will not be accompanied by any improvement in services, nor an increase in speed in the Internet connection, nor greater mobile data bonuses.
With the new prices, the Movistar Max rate increases from 57.90 to 59.90 euros per month, with an increase of 3.45%; Movistar Unlimited rises from 74.90 to 76.90 euros per month (+2.67%); Movistar Unlimited x2 goes from 90.90 to 93.90 euros per month (+3.3%); and Movistar Unlimited x4, from 120.90 to 123.90 euros per month (+2.48%). The new Movistar Plus+, the pay television channel launched last summer that raises the price from 11 to 12 euros for subscribers to another Movistar service, although it will remain at 14 euros per month for non-subscribers.
The increases will be greater in residual services or old plans. Thus, the rates of the old Movistar Fusión with television included, already discontinued, also increase in price, up to 4 euros more per month, for those who keep them contracted. The establishment of calls from pay-per-use mobile lines (not subject to any unlimited calling plan) stands at 0.50 euros, compared to the 0.40 euros at which it was set until now.
The operator offers the customer the option to unsubscribe if they do not agree with the increase, without suffering any penalty. Movistar contracts incorporate a clause to increase prices due to three reasons: increase in the CPI, regulatory changes, or due to costs in the sector (energy, licenses, taxes, etc.). In this case, the company has notified subscribers that the increase that it will apply at the beginning of 2024 is due to its desire to “offer the customer the best service and superior connectivity in quality and coverage, through investments in the networks.” fiber and 5G+ mobile.”
In this way, Movistar joins Vodafone, which recently announced that in January it will apply a general rate increase of 4.38%, in line with the annual CPI, calculated with data from last October. As has happened in other years, it is expected that in the coming weeks, Orange will announce a price increase for its main rate plans. Last March, the French operator applied an increase of between 2 and 5 euros to its fiber and mobile packages. For its part, MásMóvil updated some of its rates at the end of 2022, although the increases only affected about 20% of its customers, especially second mobile lines contracted in packages from the Yoigo, MásMóvil and Virgin brands with increases of between 1 to 3 euros. Digi is the only large operator that keeps its prices frozen or even lower in 2023, and does not plan to apply any increase in 2024.
