Tesla does not believe allegations of a lack of occupational safety at its factory in Grünheide near Berlin are accurate. “For us as Gigafactory Berlin Brandenburg, the health protection of our employees is our top priority and therefore also occupational safety,” the company said when asked. All workplaces would be assessed using standardized risk assessments. The resulting measures would be implemented. All employees have the necessary work and safety clothing and are trained in protective measures.

No figures from the cooperative
At the end of September, the magazine “Stern” reported on a striking number of work accidents at the Tesla factory in Grünheide near Berlin. Tesla reported 190 reportable accidents between June and November 2022. The wood and metal trade association explained that in 2022, car manufacturers and suppliers statistically had 16 reportable accidents per 1,000 employees. If Tesla’s workforce of around 4,000 employees were used as a basis for May 2022, statistically speaking, 64 reportable accidents would be normal – significantly fewer than the 190 researched by “Stern”. However, the cooperative did not provide any specific figures for Tesla.
Tesla said accidents are analyzed and evaluated by qualified personnel. Appropriate precautionary measures or necessary changes would then be implemented. Compliance with occupational safety measures throughout the factory is checked frequently and regularly by the responsible authorities. The opposition left-wing faction in the Brandenburg state parliament wants to make the number of work accidents in the Tesla factory a topic in a current hour of the state parliament next week.
IG Metall sees high pressure
According to IG Metall, numerous Tesla employees complain about poor working conditions in discussions with the union. They therefore rate the workload as extreme due to short cycle times, a lack of personnel and excessive production targets. IG Metall spoke of an “atmosphere of fear,” which Tesla rejected.
The factory in Grünheide in Brandenburg opened in March 2022. According to the company’s most recent information, around 11,000 employees work there. Environmentalists and nature conservationists see major risks, also because part of the factory site is in a water protection area.
