New connection, new problems: With the iPhone 15, CarPlay in the car may no longer work properly. Either there is no connection to the vehicle’s infotainment system at all or it only works after several attempts, as affected users describe. Sometimes CarPlay temporarily works as usual, but then suddenly refuses to work for no apparent reason. According to individual reports, it can also happen that the CarPlay interface freezes during operation; sometimes only restarting the iPhone or the entertainment system helps.

CarPlay connection unreliable
A clear trigger for the CarPlay problems has not yet emerged; various vehicle models from very different manufacturers are mentioned – as well as the iPhone 15, 15 Plus, 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max. Users who have the iPhone wired to one seem to be most frequently affected Connect a USB-A port in your vehicle – but this is probably the most common combination. Apparently it mostly depends on the USB-A to USB-C cable used. Replacing it can help, users report in Apple’s support forum, among others. Sometimes a new cable ensures that the CarPlay connection works again, at least temporarily, although individual users report that after several days there are suddenly dropouts and connection difficulties again. There are also occasional reports of problems when iPhones are connected to the car using the included USB-C to USB-C cable.
The alternative method of continuing to use the USB-A to Lightning cable available in the car and using Apple’s new Lightning to USB-C adapter, which costs 35 euros, also does not always seem to be successful. There are also problem reports for this constellation.
Apple recommends cables or adapters
In cars with a USB-A port, Apple recommends using “a compatible USB-C to USB-A cable,” without going into detail about which cables are considered compatible – and which are not. The manufacturer also sees the 35 euro adapter as specifically suitable for use with CarPlay.
Affected iPhone 15 owners currently have little choice but to try out different cables and adapters to find a version that works for a longer period of time. According to Macrumors, there are also sometimes difficulties with wireless CarPlay connections, for example in combination with an active VPN. It remains to be assumed that Apple also needs to improve the software here.
