macOS 14 Sonoma welcomes you with a fresh lock screen, but that’s just one of the operating system’s innovations. Our tips show in detail what other useful functions Apple provides, where they are and how they can be used.
1 Use slow motion screensavers and wallpapers
Apple offers a total of 120 landscape, city, underwater and space shots in both the Screen Saver and Wallpaper settings. This duplication may seem confusing at first, especially since the desktop background still does not allow animations. However, the selection of the background image also applies to the newly designed lock screen (see tip 2). If you lock the Mac with Control + Command + Q, the background motif slowly starts moving and acts like a screen saver. When unlocked, the video continues to run briefly in the background of the desk, slows down to a standstill and thus provides the new background image.
Since these are quite large videos, Apple does not ship them with macOS Sonoma. As soon as you click on a motif in one of the four horizontally scrollable categories, the system loads the film from Apple’s servers. You can see the download progress by the pie chart in the thumbnail and by the name at the top. If you click on another video while a download is in progress, it will be interrupted and not continued in the background. You can identify scenes that have not yet been loaded by the downward arrow next to the captions.
