data2day 2023: Keynotes on Data Mesh and Open Data
Anyone who is interested in current, practical knowledge about data science, data engineering and data analytics will find valuable information, answers and support at data2day 2023. The conference, organized by iX and dpunkt.verlag, will take place on October 11th and 12th, 2023 now taking place for the tenth time – again at the IHK Karlsruhe.

Know-how für Data Scientists, Data Engineers und Data-Teams
No matter where data scientists, data teams or companies are on the journey to becoming a data-driven company, in over 30 lectures and workshops, experienced experts will present the most important data skills, tools and best practices that companies need when planning, implementing and Support organization of data projects. Experience reports provide insights from the practical implementation of data science and machine learning projects.
Data Mesh: Uncovering data treasures with a decentralized data architecture approach
This time, a thematic focus is on the data mesh – a decentralized data architecture approach that, among other things, is intended to enable developers to independently carry out cross-domain data analyzes in order to uncover valuable data treasures. Zhamak Dehghani, founder and CEO of Nextdata, is considered the founder of the data mesh concept. In this year’s opening keynote, her former ThoughtWorks colleague Syed Atif Akhtar will give a detailed insight into the practical implementation of Data Mesh and also look ahead to the future development of the paradigm.
Miriam Bressan explores the “significance of OPEN for data science and artificial intelligence” in her keynote speech on the second day of the conference. As a solution architecture team leader at Red Hat, she works every day to bridge the gap between technological innovation and strategic business goals. In her lecture, she reveals the crucial role that open source, open models, open data and an open mindset play.
Full-day workshops on the data build tool and Polars
On the workshop day following the conference, two full-day interactive tutorials offer the opportunity to delve deeper into central data2day topics. Niklas Haas and Matthias Niehoff promise a comprehensive, yet easy-to-understand introduction to the data build tool (dbt) for beginners and advanced users. The tool for SQL-based data engineering and data analytics represents the paradigm shift from ETL (extract, transform, load) to ELT (extract, load, transform), but has high requirements with a steep learning curve.
Thomas Bierhance and Tobias Sachon show how processing structured data can be easier with the Pandas alternative Polars in their “Practical workshop Polars: The Turbo Boost for Dataframes”.
Impressions from data2day 2022
The lecture program also offers a wide range of topics and trends from big data, data science and machine learning, which are aimed equally at data scientists, data engineers, AI experts and DevOps managers as well as software developers and software architects directed.
