According to new information from the supplier industry, the development steps for Apple’s first spatial computer, the Vision Pro, could be significantly smaller and slower than initially expected. A low-cost model has therefore been canceled for the time being. The second version of the Vision Pro is not expected before 2027, at least predicts analyst Ming-Chi Kuo from the financial house TF International Securities (Taiwan).

This would mean that the development of the Vision Pro would differ significantly from that of the iPhone in the years after its initial release in 2007. While Apple’s smartphone was improved annually and with significant development steps, Kuo expects the Vision Pro to take a different course. The reasons he cites are not Apple’s lack of will or possibly low demand, but rather limited production capacities.
Well under a million devices per year
In the summer, when the Vision Pro was presented at the WWDC developer conference in June, it was still assumed that more than a million devices could be manufactured per year in 2024. Disillusionment is now spreading in China. According to Kuo, a survey of Apple’s suppliers has shown that they expect a maximum of 400,000 to 600,000 devices in the first year.
This could also mean that plans for a cheaper frame for the glasses have been put to rest for the time being, says Kuo. A cheaper Vision Pro was originally expected for 2025. Unless Apple lowers the $3,500 price, it is not expected to require significantly more shipments starting in 2025.
When the Vision Pro 2 comes
According to Kuo, a Vision Pro 2 will not be available until 2027 – four years after the initial presentation and three years after publication in the USA. Given the high price, some potential customers may breathe a sigh of relief for now. Apple itself does not make any statements about such speculations. The company only said during its September event that preparations for market launch in 2024 are on schedule. The Vision Pro will first appear in the USA.
