The strength of convictions in politics can have the effect of forging an immovable position, perhaps that is why Feijóo remains today in the same place he was a month ago: unable to reach an agreement with anyone other than the extreme right, the Canarian Coalition and UPN. . Or that is the moral mantra that the candidate for the investiture who goes hand in hand with Vox came to sell to Parliament today: that of establishing himself as the honorable politician, of word and principle in the face of the recreation of vain charlatans who have converted Congress in pure power play. This dichotomous caricature constructed with studied Tiktoker political rhetoric may help him distinguish himself from Sánchez, but it leads the political world into a dead end. The brutal displacement of politics towards morality that we are seeing these days, with the argument of dignity, humiliation, traitors and lack of scruples, closes the circle of any negotiation or dialogue because the ideas and projects of order political and the conciliation of conflicting interests that it demands, is replaced by a world morally ordered around exclusive opposites. The implacable cleric contrasted with the politician who took advantage of his power: number of deputies, absolute majority of the Senate, regional and local governments (with Vox). Also the one who appealed to leave bibloquism and the one who denounced that it is not true that half of the Spaniards cannot understand each other with the other half. It is very true. This would not be a performative contradiction if Feijóo had not appealed to the spirit of harmony while enclosing himself in the fortress of good against the forces of evil or had not drawn a Spain in moral decline (sic) to establish himself as the only savior, old resource of the populist.
More information
Feijóo seems not to want to realize or knows too well what she is doing: if reality does not fit my moral mold, so much the worse for her. The most serious thing is to cover with morality the symbols and institutions that belong to everyone, as he already does when he talks about the Constitution, the head of the State or even the Transition. And yet, there was no more political period in our recent history than that of the Transition. The Constitution is not the Holy Grail that must be saved from the infidels, but rather the political instrument that sets the rules of the democratic game for the conciliation of conflicting interests that make negotiation in democracy possible. This Feijóo turned moralizing clergyman tried to make us believe today that he has said no to Junts for its principles and that is why he remains unscathed like a statue of Saint Teresa. It is a curious way of recognizing that he has also spoken with Puigdemont and that perhaps – just perhaps – what has prevented that negotiation is going hand in hand with Vox. But it is easier to proceed with this moral and factional appropriation of everyone’s symbols, even in an investiture (or censorship) session, at the price of eating away, every day a little more, at our democratic institutions.
