The vast majority were displaced by the recent military operation of the Azerbaijan army to regain control of this Azeri territory, with a majority population of ethnic Armenians and which enjoyed de facto independence for decades after the disintegration of the Soviet Union.
“4,850 refugees from Nagorno Karabakh entered Armenia,” the Cabinet of Ministers said on Telegram.
According to the Armenian Government, 3,900 displaced people have already been registered and another 950 are in the process.
“There were a tremendous number of people. We were just sitting next to each other on the floor, it didn’t matter if we were rich or poor, all in the same place,” says one of the refugees. _”_I have no relatives here, nor anywhere to go,” says another.
Russian peacekeepers supervise evacuations of Azeris from Stepanakert/Jankendi. After their defeat in a lightning military operation, the independentists negotiate with Baku the reintegration of Nagorno Karabakh into Azerbaijan. Many of its 120,000 ethnic Armenian residents are expected to leave the land of their ancestors.
