The latest lawn mowing robots from EcoFlow, Ecovacs, Einhell, Husqvarna, Segway, Stiga and Worx no longer need a boundary wire, but instead orientate themselves using GPS, AI camera, Lidar, UWB and other tricks. We discuss how well this worked in the c’t test, how you can still set up exclusion zones and how well the mowers can avoid obstacles – including keeping hedgehogs alive.

c’t editor and smart gardening expert Sven Hansen has installed a boundary wire in his garden, but modifications to the garden and some mishaps have put a lot of strain on the installation, so that his mower, which relies on the wire, has not been used for a long time . Such specimens are now available from 500 euros – at least 1000 euros are due for the test field that promises more intelligence.
Some of the wireless mowers start immediately – a very pleasant, quick feeling of success. Others require preparatory work before the first trip: You no longer have to dig in wire, but you do have to install GPS receivers or other radio systems, or even walk around the edge of the garden with the mower. What is also crucial for convenience is whether you can edit the garden map (however created) later: not at all, in the app, or, for example, by quickly placing magnetic strips around new flower beds.
We also discuss hedgehog protection, i.e. how the robots recognize and avoid disruptive objects. Hedgehogs are particularly at risk because, unlike other animals, they do not flee, but instead isolate themselves – and are easily run over and injured or killed.
