During the start of the current Football Champions League season and after the release of iOS 17, a new data throughput record was achieved at Europe’s largest internet exchange. Yesterday, Tuesday evening, at exactly 9:26 p.m. CEST, the data throughput was 15.29 Tbit/s, exceeding 15 terabits per second for the first time. The operator announced this and the increase in traffic can also be seen on a website with statistics on the DE-CIX (German Commercial Internet Exchange). On average, the data throughput has recently been over 11 Tbit/s; the previous high was reached on August 30th at 14.9 Tbit/s.

Millions of bathtubs, hundreds of Niagara Falls
The new maximum value corresponds to the simultaneous streaming of more than five million videos in HD quality, explains DE-CIX and tries to make the magnitude comprehensible with further comparisons: “In the analog world, the flood of data is even more impressive: If a bit “If one milliliter of water were equal to one milliliter, 15 terabits would fill 3.3 million bathtubs. That would be equivalent to the amount of water falling over 385 Niagara Falls every second.” In the future, DE-CIX is certain that new data records will not only be achieved in parallel with the release of video games or software as well as live broadcast sporting events. The growing use of digital and AI services will also ensure growth, for which we are continuing to prepare.
When a data throughput of more than 14 Tbit/s was achieved for the first time on DE-CIX, the operator explained that 25 percent reserve capacity was always available for load peaks. “In the long term, we will continue to expand our capacities as soon as 65 percent of existing capacities are reached,” it said at the time. Since the beginning of 2022 alone, data throughput at Europe’s largest internet exchange has increased by more than 40 percent, and even by 150 percent over the past five years. At peak times, more than 1 Tbit/s is now also transmitted at the DE-CIX locations in New York, Madrid and Mumbai. Last year, a total of 48 exabytes of data were exchanged across all DE-CIX nodes, 25 percent more than the year before.
