With the success of ChatGPT, it was only a matter of time before one of the “classic” voice assistance systems was enhanced with a new AI model to enable more natural conversations. You should be able to have longer conversations with the user and not just process individual command lines. Amazon has now presented just such a revised version of Alexa at its fall event this year.
The new AI voice assistant will be rolled out as a “free preview” on all Echos in the USA in the near future. After installation, you can then start a conversation without having to address the voice assistant with “Alexa” over and over again. Instead, the mode runs until the user ends it. In the English language version the term for this is “Exit”. However, thanks to the integrated cameras, Alexa on smart displays in the Echo Show series should be able to recognize whether she is being spoken to or another person in the room.

Better voice acting and different personalities
The new AI model also means that Alexa knows the user’s general preferences. In addition, the voice assistant should have a stronger personality, which also includes preferences. For example, during the live demonstration, she stated that she was a fan of the Seattle football team.
Finally, the naturalness of the voice output is noticeably increased. The new text-to-speech engine should be ready early next year. In addition, the developers say they are working on a so-called “Speech to Speech Engine”. This enables Alexa to understand, among other things, when the user laughs or responds (in English) with “Uh-hu” in confirmation.
Amazon also had areas of application in its kitty at the presentation. You should be able to use an app called “character.ai” to talk to various AI characters that are modeled on well-known personalities such as Socrates. “Splash” again allows you to create and modify songs. Amazon has already brought partners on board to use the new Alexa version – including several car manufacturers.
