Microsoft’s almost 40-year-old graphics software Paint now supports layers and transparency in a preliminary version. The US company announced this in a blog entry, which also states that some, but not all, users have tried out the new functions in the two test channels “Canary” and “Dev” (version 11.2308.18.0 or higher). can be.

Just a few days ago, an experimental cropping tool for MS Paint was announced. All three functions have long been standard among competitors, but unlike a number of them, Paint can be used free of charge and should be familiar to all Windows users.
Helpful for quick corrections and small image edits
As Microsoft’s Dave Grochocki explains in the blog post, the layers can be added, removed and otherwise edited in a special area on the right edge. Overall, it probably works the way we know it from other applications. Layers make it possible to edit individual parts of images independently of each other. This allows text to be adjusted later without having to touch the other image elements.
Exemption with transparency

Paint also supports transparency. Among other things, PNG files with transparent image parts can be opened and saved. The animation published by Microsoft makes it clear that this is what makes the recently added cropping tool really helpful. If you used the cropping tool previously, the removed background only became white, only now does it become transparent. This means that isolated elements can easily be placed in front of other backgrounds. If you work with several levels, the one underneath becomes visible through the cut-out.
Together, the new functions make it possible to create “exciting new images and works of art,” writes Grochocki. Under Windows, however, this should initially mean that special software is no longer necessary for small image edits and simple corrections, but rather the existing Paint is sufficient. It is still unclear whether and when the function will find its way into Windows for everyone. First of all, Microsoft asks for feedback and wants to find out how the functions are received and what problems there are with them. You should not install the preview builds on a productive system, but ideally in a virtual machine.
