The coronavirus caused 74 deaths in Álava, Bizkaia and Gipuzkoa, in the first quarter of 2023. In addition, the total number of deaths was 6,207, 3.6% less than in the same period of the previous year.
Covid-19 caused a total of 74 deaths in the Basque Country in the first quarter of 2023, all of them due to confirmed coronavirus, which represents a decrease of 90.5%. There were also 24 other deaths in which covid-19 was among the certified causes of death, but without being the fundamental cause, according to the Basque Institute of Statistics (Eustat).
By historical territories, the highest number corresponds to Bizkaia with 47, followed by Gipuzkoa with 23 and Álava with 4. By age, the most affected groups were those over 80 years of age (57), followed by those aged 60-79 ( 16).
In the first quarter of 2023, the total number of deaths in the Basque Autonomous Community was 6,207, 3.6% less than in the same period of the previous year.
Thus, in this first quarter of the year the number of deaths was lower than in 2022 (6,439) and than in 2020 (6,522), but higher than in 2021 (5,994), than in 2019 (6,011) and than the average for the 2010 period. -2019 (5813).
The number of deaths decreased in the three historical territories, highlighting Bizkaia where the decrease was 4.8%, with 3,281 people deceased. In Álava with 800 people dead, the decrease was 3.8%; and in Gipuzkoa with 2,126 deaths, the decrease was 1.6%.
The main causes of death were tumors and diseases of the circulatory system, which produced 1,621 and 1,594 deaths, respectively, which means that between the two they account for 51.8% of deaths. Respiratory system causes were the third cause of mortality with 543 cases (8.7%).
Deaths due to causes of the nervous system were the fourth cause of death with 404 deaths (6.5%). Deaths due to diseases of the digestive system were 303 (4.9%).
With this data, the vegetative growth of the Basque Autonomous Community was negative in the first quarter of 2023, with a decrease of 3,094 people. Population has been lost in the three territories: in Bizkaia 1,701 people, in Gipuzkoa 1,084 and in Álava 309.
