Anyone who took a closer look discovered numerous references to Apple’s next big thing: the Vision Pro at Apple’s iPhone 15 keynote on Tuesday. The mixed reality headset, which Apple calls a spatial computer, is still on the planning list for spring 2024, initially only in the USA. Several new products that were presented this week are prepared for the Vision Pro. Apple CEO Tim Cook also revealed something about the strategy when it comes to entertainment on the headset.

iPhone 15 Pro does it in 3D
First of all, there are the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max, which for the first time have technology on board that can be used to record 3D clips that can then be played on the Vision Pro. These “spatial videos” are quite impressive on the headset, but so far it looked like they could only be recorded with the Vision Pro. And that’s exactly what seemed disturbing in demo videos, because you had to wear the headset on your head for a birthday or another life event that you wanted to capture realistically.
Now it’s easy to do with the iPhone and the Vision Pro’s “uncanny valley” problem has been solved, at least in this area. The approach is not atypical for Apple: the company’s products often become better when you combine them, be it an Apple Watch with iPhone notifications or an iPad with a Mac that you use as an external screen. The “Spatial Video” capability also comes very early on the iPhone; the rumor mill thought that this would be something for the iPhone 16 next year.
AirPods Pro 2 audio only with Vision Pro in the best format
The new AirPods Pro 2 with USB-C port on the charging case are also Vision Pro compatible in a special way. They can be used as an alternative to the headset’s built-in speakers, providing what Apple says is the “industry’s most advanced wireless audio experience.” Only on the Vision Pro can a new wireless lossless format with 20 bits and 48 kHz be used in conjunction with the plugs – but not on the iPhone (so far).
What they have in common is that only the very latest AirPods Pro 2 with USB-C support the technology. If you have the previous model with a Lightning charging case, you’re out. This means: Apple may generate additional purchases among audio friends worth 279 euros each (at least 20 euros cheaper than before) who already own the “old” AirPods Pro 2. Finally, Apple CEO Tim Cook also announced that the Vision Pro will be the best way to consume TV and film content in the future – of course from its own streaming service TV+.
