Gematik boss Markus Leyck Dieken is leaving the future digital agency for the healthcare sector prematurely. His contract would actually be valid until 2024, but Leyck Dieken and the head of the department for digital and innovation at the Federal Ministry of Health, Susanne Ozegowski, have signed a corresponding termination agreement. This emerges from a letter from Ozegowski to the other shareholders of Gematik, which was available to the Ärzteblatt. Accordingly, the cancellation of his contract happened “by best mutual agreement”. The dismissal must therefore be decided by the Gematik shareholders’ meeting, with the BMG having the majority share in Gematik with 51 percent.

There were already rumors in March that the Gematik boss was giving up his position, as The Pioneer reported. At that time it was also said that there would already be a successor. So far there is no further information about this.
Leyck Diecken enjoyed “complete trust”
At that time, Gematik kept a low profile with heise online: They did not comment on “personnel speculation”. A spokeswoman for the Federal Ministry of Health said something similar: “Markus Leyck Dieken enjoys the trust of the Federal Minister of Health. His contract runs until mid-2024. We do not comment on personnel speculation.” He had emphasized to the Ärzteblatt that he enjoyed “the complete trust” of Federal Health Minister Karl Lauterbach.
Since taking office in July 2019, Leyck Dieken had fought to give Gematik greater assertiveness against the many shareholders such as the doctors, pharmacists and health insurance associations. This seemed to work with the digital strategy for the healthcare system, which envisages Gematik being 100 percent subordinate to the Federal Ministry of Health. But apparently the Gematik boss had become “too self-confident and independent” for some of the protagonists in the ministry, as Apotheke Adhoc reported with reference to The Pioneer.
There has been criticism of Leyck Dieken, among other things, with regard to his attitude to data protection with e-prescriptions – for example, that he consciously accepted a security gap in order to access the e-prescription data again.
