According to kyiv, 420,000 Russian soldiers could be in Ukraine, but in total they would be more, since we must add those of the national guard and other unaccounted units. President Putin would like to avoid mobilizations close to next year’s elections.
More than a quarter of a million Russians have voluntarily enlisted in the armed forces in recent months. Russian President Vladimir Putin stated on Tuesday that every day between 1,000 and 1,500 Russians were voluntarily signing contracts to enlist in the army.
How many Russian soldiers are currently in Ukraine?
The spokesman for the main Ukrainian intelligence directorate, Major General Vadim Skibitskii, stated that the Russian military has concentrated a total of 420,000 military personnel in occupied Ukraine. That does not include Rosgvardia – the Russian national guard – and other military units and structures. So this figure does not fully reflect the total number of Russian forces involved in the Ukrainian war.
Ukrainian and British military officials reported on September 11 that more could arrive.
The UK Ministry of Defense reported that the Russian military aims to recruit 420,000 troops by the end of 2023.
The Institute for the Study of War has previously assessed that this number likely includes many volunteers already fighting in Ukraine and who were forced to sign contracts with the Russian Defense Ministry before July 1, 2023.
The UK Ministry of Defense says that in the run-up to the Russian presidential election scheduled for March 2024, Russian authorities are likely to try to prevent further unpopular demonstrations.
